Lab Meetings, Project Meetings, Individual Meetings
Fall 2023 (all mtgs with Zoom option)
Lab Meetings: TBD, starting after Labor Day
Project meetings at other times (see email / calendar invites for: Frugivora, warmXtrophic, Macrosystems Biodiversity, Climate Intervention Biology)
Expectations for Lab Meetings, Project Meetings, Individual Meetings: attendance and updates
Clear, transparent, accessible, and frequent communication among all team members is key to the success of any collaboration. The SpaCE Lab meets regularly and uses Google Shared Drives, GitHub, and Slack to facilitate inclusive collaboration and sharing of information. This communication helps ensure that all members of a project have ample opportunities to learn about project progress, engage in discussions and decision-making, adjust timelines as needed, and address issues as they arise. In the SpaCE Lab, Lab Meetings and Project Meetings are typically every other week during the Fall and Spring Semesters. Individual meetings with grad students and postdocs are typically every other week or monthly during the year. At the beginning of each semester, the first Lab Meeting, Project Meeting and Individual Meetings focus on goals for the semester and year, and those goals are revisited over the course of the semester. Meetings are organized by the Lab Meeting Coordinator (rotating position assigned to graduate student or postdoc in the lab, per year). Occasionally we join lab meetings with other labs, such as Kyla Dahlin's ERSAM Lab. Lab Meetings typically include brief project updates followed by practice talks, paper discussions, local field trips, responsible conduct of research training, discussions on DEIJ, or friendly reviews of lab papers.
For core members of the lab (graduate students, postdocs, undergraduates, technicians), attendance to Lab Meetings, Individual Meetings, and Project Meetings is expected unless there is a scheduling conflict or emergency (which needs to be communicated directly to Phoebe; see our Lab Emergency Contact List in our MSU_SpaCE_Lab_MAIN Google Shared Drive). Attendance to these meetings is important because we want to foster a positive and supportive lab community and we use the Meetings for announcements and sharing ideas. Undergraduates should attend any additional relevant Project Meetings, and communicate questions to the Phoebe/Beth/Pat/Kara/Moriah/Mark/Emily via the Project Google Doc. Graduate students, Postdocs, and Technicians should attend their Project Meeting in addition to the Lab Meeting and Individual Meetings, and update Phoebe/Pat with any questions or concerns between meetings via the specific Project Google Doc(s) or GitHub issue if it's related to code. Every week (and ahead of Project or Individual Meetings), graduate students, postdocs, and technicians are expected to write brief updates and questions on the Project Google Doc, including relevant links to code, documents, etc.
